On late-night walks in Manhattan, Anja Hitzenberger photographed the flowers, plants, and workers during the night shift in run-down New York City delis (small grocery stores usually open 24/7). Anja has focused on the theme of gentrification in several of her recent photography and video projects in New York, Vienna and Taiwan. New York is probably changing the fastest, with buildings being torn down to be replaced with structures ten times taller than the previous, and rent becoming unaffordable to many. But also people’s changing eating and shopping habits are a cause why delis are disappearing quickly. Just a few months after Anja finished this project, three of the delis she had documented for this zine shut their doors forever.
