PHOTOBOOK BREAKFAST @ ROTLICHT Festival
Saturday, 16 November 2024, 10:00–12:00

Book presentation:
„Totes Gebirge“ by Agnes Prammer & Johann Schoiswohl

It’s a big, but surprisingly light book for two difficult subjects: Death and grief. The photographs were taken over a period of thirteen years. Johann Schoiswohl shows mountain landscapes, Agnes Prammer wet plate portraits, interspersed with an essay by Sandra Gugić and a text by Stephen Zepke.
Like mourning itself, it is a back and forth; an up and down. The reader’s expectations are built up and unexpectedly broken. “You never walk alone”. The book and the materials allow for transparency and multiple layers. Nothing is revealed quickly. The book has a certain fragility about it. And its unusual thinness and flexibility also contradict the canon of the typical photo book. The artist’s book was designed by Christine Zmölnig (sensomatic).

Talk:
PhotoResearcher Photobooks

Since 1990, the European Society for the History of Photography (ESHPh) has been publishing the journal PhotoResearcher twice a year to propel meaningful enquiries into the history of the medium and to reflect together with emerging and established scholars on its future. Many PhotoResearcher special issues have been a home for photobooks. They have addressed the position of this unique vehicle of creative expression in the artistic landscape, along with photobooks’ design innovations, their political ramifications, and the culture out of which they have emerged which they also, in turn, shape.
Dr. Hanin Hannouch (Curator of Photography, Film, and Audio at Weltmuseum Wien / Vice-Presi
dent of ESHPh) will be presenting the latest three PhotoResearcher issues dedicated to photobooks.

Reflektor is a community of photographers dedicated to their art. It is both a label for photobook production and a platform to exchange and support photographers. Cooperating with associated branches such as  graphic designers, writers, printers, but also curators and galleries. Reflektor was founded in 2017 by a dedicated group of photographers working in Vienna, assigning the Reflektor label to their upcoming photobooks. Reflektor promotes and enhances their members impact on a international basis, being present at photography fairs and speaking as one for the members. It is also a sophisticated club building up a crowd-owned-collection of selected artworks. Ultimately it is a symbol of quality and passion.
